Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Tatiana Shiatsu – Your personal Shiatsu therapist in Lucerne
Shiatsu literally means "finger pressure." It is a form of body therapy developed in Japan based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Through gentle but deep-acting pressure using thumbs, palms, elbows, and knees on the body's energy pathways (meridians), blockages are released, and the body's self-healing powers are stimulated.
Shiatsu is excellent for regulating the autonomic nervous system. In our hectic times, the sympathetic nervous system (the "activity nerve") is often overstimulated. Shiatsu stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for rest, regeneration, and digestion. This helps the body break down stress hormones, relax deeply, and "wind down." It is an effective method for burnout prevention.
No. Shiatsu is considered a complementary method. It is not a substitute for medical or psychiatric treatment for acute or severe illnesses. However, Shiatsu can wonderfully accompany medical therapies, alleviate side effects of medication, accelerate the healing process, and strengthen general well-being during a recovery phase.
Unlike classical massage, Shiatsu is practiced on the clothed body. Please wear comfortable clothing made of natural fibers (e.g., cotton), such as sweatpants, leggings, and a long-sleeved t-shirt. It is also important to bring fresh, warm socks, as the body tends to cool down easily during deep relaxation.
A treatment traditionally takes place on a soft mat (futon) on the floor. First, there is a short conversation to clarify your current needs. During the treatment, the focus is on mindfulness and silence. The therapist uses their own body weight to apply leaning pressure, as well as to perform stretches and joint rotations.
Yes, many people suffering from chronic tension headaches or migraines find Shiatsu very helpful. By gently releasing tension in the neck and shoulder area, pressure in the head can subside. Shiatsu has a balancing effect on the energy flow here and helps to distribute the congested energy away from the head into the rest of the body.
Shiatsu is suitable for people of all ages – from babies to seniors. Since the method can be adapted very gently, people in the most diverse life situations benefit from it. Whether for symptom relief, stress management, or simply to do something good for oneself and improve body awareness.
Yes, Shiatsu is wonderful support during this special time. It can help alleviate typical complaints such as back pain, water retention, or nausea and strengthen the connection to the child.
The main difference lies in the approach: While classical massage primarily targets muscles and blood circulation (often using oil), Shiatsu works energetically on the meridians (energy pathways). No oil is used, and you remain clothed. Shiatsu often has a more meditative effect and aims to balance the energy flow (Ki) throughout the entire system.
That depends on your needs.
For acute complaints: Weekly sessions over a short period are often useful.
For chronic issues: A rhythm of every two to three weeks has often proven effective.
For prevention/relaxation: Many clients come once a month to regularly maintain their well-being and stay in balance.
Absolutely. Sleep disorders are often a sign that one cannot "switch off" and too much energy is stuck in the head. Shiatsu promotes deep relaxation and "grounding," which helps the nervous system switch from activity mode to rest mode. This can make falling asleep easier and sustainably improve sleep quality.
In Switzerland, Shiatsu is a recognized method of complementary therapy. Many health insurance companies cover a large part of the costs if you have the corresponding supplementary insurance. It is advisable to clarify this directly with your own insurance provider before the first session.
